I’m optimistic that most of the American Substackers have already voted or will before the polls close this evening. This election is the most crucial one in my dwindling memory. Many of us are asking if our imperfect tradition as a democracy within a constitutional republic will survive after today.
Like other independent voters, my wife and I belong to no party and have our doubts about the efficacy of a primarily two-party system. Personally, I prefer a multiparty parliamentarian system like those in Scandinavia and Europe.
Today we voted for the third time against a person, whom we believe should have never been allowed to run in the first place. We know many people who’ve voted as we have. We also know people who support the other person, despite his indictments and a felony conviction to date. This phenomenon is puzzling, but a reality. We’re hopeful that today’s election may result in a more positive, less contentious future.
I’ll end this will a haiku:
may ill feelings fall
like November’s wind-blown leaves
with peace tomorrow
I like your haiku, Fred. It strikes a nice optimistic note before the inevitable chaos comes if Trump loses.
Here’s my haiku
May we know who wins
May it be definitive
And may he be gone!
